Mechelen
Mechelen was evangelised in the 8th century by St Rumbold, an Irish monk whose feats and miracles are described on panels in the cathedral. Authority on the town went from the Prince-bishops of Liege to the Counts of Flanders and the Dukes of Burgundy (14th to 15th century). Already a prosperous town thanks to its position on the river Dijle, Mechelen reached its peak in the early 16th century when Margaret of Austria, Charles V’s aunt, ruled the Netherlands and lived in the city. In1835, the first public railway on the continent linked Mechelen and Brussels.
Many monuments evoke the town’s past splendour like the St Rumbold cathedral, the see of the Mechelen-Brussel bishop, and three former town halls.

Namur
With its population of 108,000, Namur, located at the crossing of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, is the capital of the Walloon region and hosts the regional government in a building known as L’Elysette. The town evolved around its citadel, the stronghold of the Dukes of Namur, which held a strategic position at the confluence of two important rivers. Bombed in both World Wars, Namur has been a comparatively peaceful place ever since as it was spared by the frenetic industrialisation of most of the rest of Northern Europe. It is now an administrative centre and a tourist attraction.

Spa, the town wich became a noun
Spa – like Sandwich or Rugby – is one of those rare places that gave their name to a speciality which later enjoyed worldwide fame. Thanks to its waters, the Belgian town is now associated, the world over, to establishments restoring health and form. Spa (Aquae Spadanae in Latin) took its name from a wallon word meaning fountain. It became world famous thanks to a Briton who spread the word. In 1571, after a visit to Spa, William Slingsby decided to create an hydrotherapy centre in Harrogate, Yorkshire, which he called the English Spa. The world spa became synonymous with water town and as a result of the recent trend for health spas throughout Europe, the word is now also used in other languages. It is sometimes suggested that spa was an acronym for the Latin phrase Salus per aquam (health through water) but the word has been in use long before the trend for acronyms. With its architecture typical of water towns, Spa is bidding to become a World Heritage site.

Stavelot
Stavelot is renowned for its carnival, the Carnaval de la Laetare des Blancs-Moussis.
