Barbados is the most Easterly of the Caribbean Island and covers an area of 166 square miles, with a population of 280,000 (Estimated in July 2006). The island is actually an enormous and ancient coral reef that was formed around one million years ago, and with its average of 340 days sunshine per year, friendly inhabitants, well developed amenities and wonderful restaurants and nightlife it is no wonder Barbados is one of the most desirable holiday destinations. The islanders are called 'Bajans' and are mainly West Indian by descent, though the island has ties to England from colonial days when the sugar industry reigned supreme.

Golf Barbados
Barbados Golf Club 
The Barbados Golf Club course is an 18-hole, par 72, championship-standard golf course located. It is located in the parish of Christchurch, just off Highway 7 that leads from the airport. There is a clubhouse, bar and restaurant, with club hire and shoe rentals available. There are warm-up nets and practice chipping and putting greens. The Barbados Golf Club is open to the general public.
Sandy Lane
Offers 3 courses, the 18-hole, par 74, 7060 Country Club, with the clubhouse that serves the 3 courses, The Old Nine, a 9-hole course that winds between through the Sandy Lane Estate and the villas close to the beachfront, offers a more relaxing challenge. The Green Monkey is the newest addition, a 18-hole course carved out of a former quarry. The clubhouse at the Country Club has a luxurious locker room, restaurant and bar. Tee times at all 3 courses are available to visitors.
The Royal Westmoreland
A world-class championship standard 18-hole, par 72, 6870 yard course on the west coast. Amongst Golf Digests 100 best golf courses, this is a course of unrivalled beauty, with views of the shimmering ocean from every hole. The course is reserved for members, members guests and Royal Westmoreland residents, though a small numbers of tee-times are made available for visitors between 10.20am and 11am.
The Rockley Golf Club
Located at Rockley in Chirstchurch, this 9-hole (with alternate tees for a back 9) par 70, 5610 yard course is ideally suited to visitors who want to play a relaxed round of golf, yet still provides a challenge for all ages and abilities. The course is not the longest, but the tight fairways demand accuracy and good club selection. There is a well-stocked pro shop and the friendly club bar and restaurant 'Preferred Lies'.
Almond Beach Village
Located just north of Speightstown at the northern end of the west coast, this par 3, 9-hole course offers a relaxing opportunity for a round of golf. The course is primarily designed to compliment the Almond Beach hotel facilities and may not offer a challenge for the dedicated golfer, but still is a very nice course, and players can relax after the round on the beautiful Heywoods Beach that the course is next to.

| Climate
Barbados enjoys a tropical climate, with mostly sunny and fair weather
and an average daytime high of between 25ºC and 29ºC (75ºF and 85ºF). The
island enjoys approximately 3000 hours of sunshine per year, but these hot
conditions are countered by the cooling northeast tradewinds. The dry season
occurs from January to July. Hurricanes usually miss Barbados, instead the
island can experience some spectacular tropical rainstorms during August to
October, usually short and heavy spells of rain that dry up quickly in the
humidity. The climate lends itself to a casual dress sense, with cotton and
linen items ideal to keep cool. You will not need long sleeves, though some
hotels and restaurants have formal dress codes, particularly during the
Winter months of December to April. |
