Côte-d'Or

Hotels Côte-d'Or - Route des Vins de Bourgogne

Dijon
Dijon has one of the best preserved medieval centers in France. It is easy to walk and see the sites, with lots of pedestrian walking streets. You'll sample some of France's finest cuisine and drink great Burgundy wines at dinner or at one of the many wine bars in town. Dijon offers many cultural activities, including a wealth of museums and annual festivals to keep the tourist busy.

Beaune
Beaune is a lovely city with many cobbled streets, covered markets, townhouses and ramparts.
The Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune (Hospices de Beaune) is one of the finest examples of French fifteenth-century gothic architecture and the most popular jewel of Burgundy with its courtyard and its multicoloured roof tiles. The Hôtel-Dieu was built in the middle-age as a hospital for the poor and needy.
Under the cobblestones of Beaune you will find many caves built a few centuries ago, which now shelter great wines. Some caves are even open to the public for a visit and wine tasting session.
You will find the Bouzaize Park with its many trees, water feature, merry-go-round, playing area and small zoo; ideal for a relaxing stroll or a day out with the family.
Other tourist activities in Beaune include: the Square des Lions, the wine museum, the Art museum or the Basilique Notre Dame.
In the region you can find: Meursault Castle, Pommard Castle, the Cassissium (first European museum dedicated to blackcurrant), the Clos de Vougeot, the Citeaux Abbey, the Cluny Abbey, the Fontenay Abbey, Sully Castle and Germolles Castle.

  • Prehistoric hunting grounds and a museum at the Salutré rock
  • Impressive Roman remains in Autun
  • Tournus
St Philibert Abbey - Many parts of this former Benedictine monastery are still standings (dining room, cellar, cloister) and its church is one of France’s biggest roman monuments.
Built in the 17th century, Tournus Hotel Dieu is notable for its pharmacy, one of the oldest in France. It was installed in 1685 and its furniture is very picturesque. Wood shelves painted in gold were especially designed to hold the faience pots holding the medications prepared by the nuns.

  • Gueugnon - The world capital for stainless steel used the material that made its wealth and repute to embellish its streets and parks.
The museum of local history is ideal to discover the town’s productions and to see how Gueugnon evolved from a small rural village into a big industrial capital.
Discovered by chance in the bed of the river Arroux in 1984, the monoxyle pirogue (built in a single piece of wood) is nine metres long and dates from the 9th century. Soaked with water it was restored by a laboratory in Grenoble and should soon be visible in the local museum.

  • Vézelay - A big name in the middle ages, Vézelay has been designated a World Heritage Site
Once a mighty Grand Duchy with powerful Dukes who reigned as far north as Flanders, this is a fascinating region with a rich and romantic history. To discover the real Burgundy, leave the motorway at Sens, southeast of Paris, and use the old Route Nationale 6 all the way down to Mâcon.
