Vientiane – capital city of Lao PDR – is the smallest capital in the world, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm. Situated on the Mekong River in the Mekong Valley, Vientiane has a sub-tropical climate and enjoys life at a relaxed pace.
Thanks to former French occupation, Vientiane has a mixed heritage still evident in its architecture, its street names and in its food. French restaurants can be found up and down Avenue Lane Xang and France's most delicious legacy – the baguette – is ubiquitous.
Vientiane is best appreciated by the Mekong, where open air restaurants serve fresh seafood and Beer Laos until well into the evening. Laos food is considerably less spicy than that of its neighbor, Thailand, and minced pork – larb – is one local dish worth trying. Vietnamese influences are also prevalent throughout Vientiane cuisine.
For shopping, most locals and visitors head to Talat Sao – the morning market. Open all day, this market specializes in silk and clothing. Religious trinkets, DVDs, electronics and handicrafts are also on offer and the entire complex is air-conditioned, making the shopping experience somewhat more comfortable than it is at markets elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
One Vientiane's top tourist sites is Patuxay, the Victory Gate. Patuxay is a monument in the center of Vientiane – similar in structure to the Arc de Triomphe – embellished with mystical Buddhist and Hindu figures and featuring a viewing platform at the top. Another site, just outside the city center, is Buddha Park, where more than 200 cement statues of Buddhist and Hindu figures inhabit neatly trimmed gardens.
While it's possible to fly into Lao, arriving at Wattay Airport, a far cheaper and more exciting way to get to Vientiane is by rail. The overnight sleeper train makes the trip just outside Vientiane to Bangkok's Hua Lumphong Station every night.
