These small coral-fringed islands are often rated among the most stunning in the world. The two main islands are Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil; both are famed for their natural beauty and simple way of life, and both rely on tourism to support the local economy. Visitors pay a small fee on arrival, contributing to the island's protected status and continued responsible development. The beaches of Teluk Pauh, Teluk Dalam and Pair Panjang - lined with palm trees and dense jungle - are perfect for relaxing. Laze in a swinging hammock under shady casuarinas, snorkel in the crystal-clear waters or trek along the jungle paths which criss-cross both islands.
To reach the Perhentian Islands take a boat from Tok Bali or Kuala Besut. The nearest airport is at Kota Bahru. Various accommodation options are available, but to avoid the backpacker scene head to Palau Perhentian Besar, which is more expensive and luxurious.
