Sentosa Island, Resort area near Singapore
A short ferry or cable car ride from Singapore will take you to Sentosa Island, a favourite resort and entertainment destination of Singaporeans and overseas visitors alike.
Apart from its natural advantages including sandy white beaches, there
are numerous man-made attractions and lots of beach activities such as pedal
cars, aqua-bikes, fun bugs, canoes, windsurfing and swimming. There is also
fascinating flora and fauna, historical enclaves, adventure theme parks and
golf.
Its many attractions include Underwater World, Asia's first and largest
tropical fish oceanarium. This is where visitors can come face-to-face with
more than 5,000 tropical marine creatures as they walk across the bed of a
vast tropical ocean separated from sharks, huge fish and other marine life
by a specially designed tunnel with acrylic walls.
Further on is the Sentosa Orchid Gardens, with its exotic display of
orchids from around the world including a flower clock, a carp pond, a 'Bell
of Happiness' and a Japanese tea house. From there, stroll to the Flower
Terrace with its profusion of bougainvillaea, canna, lantana and maiden's
jealousy, where you can rest in a gazebo and refresh before walking around
the European-style Fountain Gardens with more than 2,500 plants from 105
different species.
The Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom Museum is one of the largest
collections of butterflies in the region with some 2,500 butterflies, and
insects from more than 50 species including rhino beetles and scorpions. In
an environment replicating nature as closely as possible, it is a monument
built in remembrance of the hundreds and thousands of these tiny creatures
lost due to increasing urbanisation and deforestation worldwide.
For a taste of adventure, explore three Asian villages (East Asia, South
Asia and South East Asia) by monorail, discover a lost civilisation and
ruined city along the waterfront promenade, treat yourself to the ultimate
water ride over river rapids and enjoy the multimedia entertainment in
VolcanoLand where a subterranean journey traces the beginning of the world
and the evolution of life.
If history interests you, Fort Siloso is Singapore's only preserved fort
and dates from the 1800s. It is a four-hectare complex with tunnels,
bunkers, cannons and machine gun ports where it is possible to relive the
life of a recruit with a sensory adventure including war games.
The Maritime Museum traces the development of sea-going craft from simple
fishing boats to the modern technological giants that make Singapore one of
the busiest sea ports in the world.
With several five-star hotels, romantic dining under the stars and night
time entertainment including a musical fountain, a night market and the
Enchanted Grove of Tembusu, Sentosa has everything a visitor could desire in
a holiday venue.
