Hermanus
Hermanus lies in the heart of the beautiful Overberg region. Hermanus, with its famous cliffs, boasts incredible ocean views and is considered one of the best places in the world to watch Southern Right whales. Spot the whales between May and December, when they leave their Antarctic feeding ground and travel to the warm waters of the Cape Coast. Other activities in the region include canoeing, horse riding and various adventure sports.
Hermanus is also a great base for visiting nearby historic places such as Cape Aghulas – Africa’s most southern tip, or the Franschhoek Winelands. The Hermanus region features the richest floral diversity in Africa and is regarded as the heart of the fynbos, the smallest of the 6 floral kingdoms in the world. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve bordering the town includes over 1100 plant species in only 15 m², almost as many as all the plant species endemic to the United Kingdom. In the nearby hamlet of Betty's Bay, boasting a sanctuary and breeding colony for African penguins, is the Harold Porter Botanical Garden, a sister garden to the world-famous Kirstenbosch Garden in Cape Town.
