London
London is one of the world's most exciting capitals. The starting point for many travelers visiting Europe, its cosmopolitan atmosphere, beautiful historic architecture and vibrant arts scene make it a great destination.
Getting around central London is easy via the tube – a vast connection of subway lines that service the inner city. Nevertheless, when the weather is dry, the walk between the most famous sites, like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London is a pleasant one.
London is home to some beautiful gothic buildings – The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Tower Bridge just a few examples. As a counterpoint, London is also home to some extremely modern architecture – 30 St Mary Axe (the Gherkin) dominates the skyline, while the Millennium Bridge spans the River Thames.

Edinburgh
Draped over a swatch of uneven high ground, Edinburgh is easily one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Crowning the Old Town is Edinburgh Castle, an emblematic fortress with 1,000 yeas of history behind it. The entire historic quarter (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) splays under it in a maze of cathedrals, stony architecture and parliament buildings.
Across the valley from the Old Town is the New Town, a misleading title. Built in the 18th century, the New Town still has a few hundred years' of history and its own UNESCO recognition.

They have self-rule, but the British are responsible for defense and foreign affairs.
Also outside of Europe remainders can be found of the Empire "where the sun never sets" : Gibraltar, islands in the Pacific and Indian Ocean and the Falkland Islands close to Argentina. All these oversea areas are called "British Dependent Territories".
